I started work in Health & Social Care in 1980 by looking after a young woman with severe Cerebral Palsy on weekends to give her parents a break.
In 1990 I joined a small residential care home as a care assistant, within 2 years I became the Deputy and stood in for the Manager when she was absent from the home. As well as the day to day care of the residents I also managed the ordering of medications and the finances of some of the residents.
In 1997 I moved to a 50 bedded care home in Redcar which provided 24-hour care for people affected by dementia. Duties included taking the residents for hospital appointments, helping with the activities and encouraging social interaction.
In 2007 I joined Clevearc’s Outreach Day Centre in Guisborough as a care assistant, with the training opportunities available within Clevearc I quickly progressed to the centre’s Deputy Manager and then the Centre’s Manager.
